I Put My Cane Away
I came to the Back to Health Program because I was taking pain killers (Lyrica) for my diabetic neuropathy and getting no relief. The pain was so bad I was only sleeping 2-3 hours per night and my life was going downhill. I was unable to work because I could only sit for one hour or less because the pain in my legs was so severe. My family and I went to Disney World and my wife had to push me in a wheelchair. I made up my mind then that this had to change.
My wife and I came to the program in March 2010, met with our doctor, and were very impressed with what he told us. The doctor said these therapies weren’t a “cure-all” but he thought they could help me. I was scheduled for IV therapy, nutritional counseling, EECP, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and microcurrent therapy. After just four days I noticed a change.
When I came to the program I had to use a cane because I was very unsteady on my feet and my wife had to help me get on the shuttle to avoid me falling. After four days of therapy I put the cane away and have not used it again to this day.
Our plan was to stay for two weeks, but at the end my stay my doctor was so impressed with the progress I was making that he felt a third week would be even more beneficial. We walked a couple of times from the clinic to the hotel. When we would cross the street the crosswalk would show three seconds left and by the time I left I had eight to nine seconds left.
On the return trip I was able to make the long walk to change airplanes all by myself. Once home I have not looked back. My family and friends cannot believe the difference in me. I can now walk and do things that I haven’t been able to do for three or four years. I still have a little pain in my legs but not like before.
Thank you Dr. Whitaker, and thanks to your wonderful staff for all of your help.
