Natural Treatments For MenopauseAt the Whitaker Wellness Institute, we help our patients implement a treatment program that includes diet, exercise, and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Our physicians tailor their recommendations to accommodate your individual needs, aiming to ease symptoms, improve quality of life, and protect against degenerative disease. The Conventional Approach to Menopause Strictly speaking, menopause means the date of your final menstrual period. But for practical purposes it encompasses the years leading up to and following this seminal event, which are marked by a progressive and gradual decline in the body’s output of estrogen and other hormones. While menopause is a natural phase in every woman’s life, the dramatic drops in these hormones have significant repercussions. Estrogen-sensitive tissues are present throughout the body, in the vagina, breasts, brain, bones, liver, heart, and skin, to name a few. The hormonal changes associated with menopause can cause a multitude of uncomfortable symptoms including hot flashes, mood swings, fatigue, and difficulties with sex. If you complain to your doctor about these symptoms, you’ll likely be told that the best way to “make it” through menopause is with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Although conventional hormone replacement drugs may ease menopausal symptoms, they come with many serious side effects that overwhelmingly offset their benefits. In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative, a large government-funded study of the popular HRT drug Prempro (a combination of progestins, or synthetic “progesterone,” and conjugated estrogen derived from the urine of pregnant mares), was abruptly terminated because of safety concerns. Women taking Prempro were found to have a 100 percent increase in blood clots, a 41 percent increase in strokes, a 29 percent increase in heart attack, and a 26 percent increase in breast cancer. Personalized Lifestyle Program for Menopause Every aspect of your health throughout your entire lifetime—including your menopausal years—is affected by what you eat. During your stay at the Back to Health Program, you will learn how an appropriate diet can actually modulate symptoms of menopause and improve your sense of well-being. Regular exercise, as you know, is an integral part of a healthful lifestyle in general. But you may not know that women who exercise regularly are less likely to suffer with typical symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. At the Whitaker Wellness Institute, our exercise physiologist will provide you with a personalized exercise program tailored for your age and activity level, along with practical tips for staying on track once you return home.
