Reflexology is the art of stimulation of various parts of the feet, hands, and ears for relaxation and disease treatment. According to reflexology charts, various organs, glands, and other parts of the body are represented on the feet, hands, and ears. This therapy is based on the concept that stimulating these reflex points releases blockages, improves energy flow, and alleviates some health problems.

Reflexology Helps a Number of Conditions

Many studies have demonstrated the benefits of this unique therapy. It's been shown to relieve discomfort and anxiety of patients suffering with cancer, chronic pain, and other debilitating conditions. It helps lower blood pressure and reduce angina. It improves quality of life and reduces symptoms of menopause and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

One study, a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, involved 38 women suffering with PMS. Half of the study subjects received reflexology as a therapy for eight weeks, in which specific parts of their feet were massaged to affect the appropriate parts of their body. The other half received a "placebo massage" of their feet.

Both groups kept a running diary of 19 physical symptoms and 19 psychological symptoms. There was a 62 percent reduction in PMS symptoms of those subjects who had received reflexology treatment, compared to only 19 percent reduction in the placebo group. In addition to alleviation of symptoms, the researchers concluded, "The primary benefit reported by the women receiving true reflexology treatment was the experience of profound relaxation."

That sense of profound relaxation is what we hear most often from our patients at the clinic who undergo this therapy. It just makes them feel better, and in my book, that goes a long ways towards health and healing.
