Reflexology is the healing art of stimulating specific points on the feet, hands, and ears in order to promote relaxation, relieve pain, and treat a wide range of health problems.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is based on the concept that different parts of your body have corresponding "reflex points" on the feet, hands, and ears.

Reflexology's roots are ancient, possibly dating back some 4,500 years in Chinese and Egyptian medicine. But modern, standardized reflexology was developed in the early 1900s by American physician William Fitzgerald, MD. Over several years, Dr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Joe Shelby Riley studied both the theory of zone therapy and modern anatomy, meticulously mapping out the body's reflex points. Today, reflexologists can go straight to a particular area of the foot, hand, or ear, and begin to relieve pain and promote healing just about anywhere in the body.

How Does Reflexology Work?

Your feet, for instance, are crowded with an intricate network of over 7,000 nerves that represent literally every part of your body. Those nerves are continuously sending and receiving signals that dramatically affect the rest of your body.

If you've ever worn a pair of uncomfortable shoes, you already know the wonderful sense of relief that comes when you finally kick them off. But it isn't just your feet that suddenly feel better. Your whole body feels different—your posture improves, your breathing deepens, and you feel more relaxed.

Although reflexology is a remarkably soothing experience, it is not a foot massage. A reflexologist assesses the feet, hands, and ears and then he or she applies targeted pressure, manipulating specific nerve points that connect with different zones in your body, including organs and glands. Depending on your health condition, the reflexologist looks for tenderness or other signs of imbalance at corresponding reflex points, and then begins to release these blockages to restore the proper flow of blood, oxygen, and nerve energy, stimulating your body to begin healing itself.
