What is Fasting?

Fasting—abstaining from food for a period of time—is a powerful, time-honored, but neglected medical therapy. In today’s world, it’s easy to forget that the human body is easily able to go for days and, in some cases, weeks without food. And few people are aware that the same innate mechanisms that allow us to survive food shortages can also be harnessed to treat diabetes, hypertensionobesity, and other health problems.

Taking a break from eating gives your body a chance to rest and, much like rebooting a computer, this therapy resets key physiological activities, which explains why benefits endure after the fast ends. A medically supervised fast at the Whitaker Wellness Institute involves much more than simply not eating. First, you will be evaluated by one of our physicians to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for this therapy, then you will be closely monitored for the duration of your fast. Per your doctor’s instructions, you may concurrently undergo other treatments offered at the clinic. You will also attend the daily lectures and additional activities of our Back to Health Program, with the exception of exercise, which should be minimal during a fast. Most important, you can rest assured that you will be undergoing this therapy in a safe, supportive, professional environment.

Mini-Fast With Exercise Program
Fasting certainly isn’t for everyone—but our mini-fast with exercise program just might be. This exceptionally powerful protocol for achieving enduring weight loss, lower blood pressure, and blood sugar control simply involves skipping breakfast, exercising in the morning, and eating sensibly at lunch and dinner. You may have to try it to believe it, but patients rave about how easy this program is to stick with. Skipping breakfast eliminates an entire meal, so you don’t have to count calories throughout the day or go on a starvation diet. Morning exercise plus targeted nutritional supplements that your Whitaker Wellness physician will prescribe significantly blunt appetite and increase energy so you won’t be hungry or tired during your mini-fast.

During your clinic visit or Back to Health Program, you will be instructed in the particulars of the mini-fast with exercise program—and begin your journey toward lasting weight loss and optimal weight.
