Natural Treatments For High Blood Pressure

At the Whitaker Wellness Institute, we do not rely on drugs to treat hypertension. In fact, one of our main goals is to help our patients get off their blood pressure-lowering medications.

The Conventional Approach to High Blood Pressure

According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 90 percent of middle-aged people will develop high blood pressure, or hypertension, at some point in their lives. It’s important to get a handle on it because hypertension, sometimes called the “silent killer” because it has no symptoms, triples your risk of dying from a heart attack, increases your risk of stroke seven-fold, and may lead to kidney disease and blindness.

High blood pressure should definitely be treated, but the conventional approach—prescribing drugs and more drugs to force the blood pressure down—is not the way to go. These drugs are riddled with so many side effects, such as fatigue and sexual dysfunction, that patients often stop taking them. “Hidden” side effects are even worse and include, for some classes of drugs, increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and death.

The problems created by these and other antihypertensive drugs are only going to get worse because, thanks to revised government guidelines, unprecedented numbers of previously healthy people are now considered to have hypertension. According to these updated guidelines, you have hypertension if your blood pressure is 140/90 or higher, and you’ll likely need two drugs to lower it. If your blood pressure is 120–130/80–89, you have “prehypertension,” and drug treatment in this group is increasingly common.

Natural Treatments for High Blood Pressure

This is nonsense. The ultimate goal in the management of hypertension is not to hit the jackpot blood pressure of 120/80. It’s to prevent stroke, heart attack, and other complications, and that requires paying attention to the patient’s overall health.

At the Whitaker Wellness Institute, we do not rely on drugs. In fact, one of our main goals is to help our patients get off their blood pressure-lowering medications using natural treatments for high blood pressure. We slowly wean them off their drugs as they start on a diet and exercise program, along with targeted nutritional supplements and, in some cases, cutting-edge therapies than enhance cardiovascular health. The result is often better blood pressure control than they achieved while taking drugs!

Personalized Lifestyle Program for High Blood Pressure

All of our patients with hypertension are instructed in a program of therapeutic lifestyle changes. We instruct them on the importance of a diet containing potassium-rich vegetables and fruit, lean protein, and omega-3 oils from salmon and other fish. They begin a moderate exercise program. They increase their intake of water and drink 12 ounces of low-sodium, high-potassium V8 juice every day.

They are also prescribed a number of nutritional supplements that help decrease blood pressure. These include Chinese herbal formulas, reishi mushrooms, hawthorn, coenzyme Q10, magnesium, fish oil, and arginine.

Unique Therapies for High Blood Pressure

Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease. Therefore, we also treat our patients with therapies that not only lower blood pressure but also improve heart and vascular function. One of them is EECP . This noninvasive therapy is best known for relieving angina in patients with coronary artery disease, but it also engenders arterial health and lowers blood pressure. Another is EDTA chelation, which removes lead and other heavy metals from the arteries, resulting in systemic improvements in cardiovascular function. Then there’s IV magnesium, which relaxes the arteries, smoothes out heart rhythms, and reduces blood pressure.

We also screen our patients with high blood pressure for sleep apnea. This overlooked condition contributes to a host of problems, including increased risk of diabetes, stroke, heart attack, and hypertension. Once sleep apnea is corrected, amazing improvements often follow.
