- How We Treat High Blood Pressure
According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 90 percent of middle-aged people will develop high blood pressure, or hypertension, at some point in their lives. It's important to get a handle on this condition because hypertension triples your risk of dying from a heart attack, increases your risk of stroke seven-fold, and is a leading cause of kidney disease and blindness.
The conventional approach—prescribing drugs and more drugs to force blood pressure down—is not the way to go. These medications are riddled with so many side effects, such as fatigue and sexual dysfunction, that patients often stop taking them. Other adverse effects are even more serious and include increased risk of diabetes, heart attack, and death.
The problems created by these drugs are only going to get worse because, thanks to revised government guidelines, unprecedented numbers of previously healthy people are now considered to have hypertension or "prehypertension," for which drug treatment is increasingly common. This is nonsense. The ultimate goal in the management of hypertension is not to hit the jackpot blood pressure of 120/80. It's to prevent stroke, heart attack, and other complications—and that requires paying attention to the patient's overall health.
At the Whitaker Wellness Institute, we do not rely on drugs. In fact, one of our main goals is to help our patients get off their medications by using natural treatments for hypertension. The result is often better blood pressure control than they achieved while taking drugs!
- Our Drug-Free Approach
At Whitaker Wellness, we use several non-drug therapies to successfully treat our patients with high blood pressure.
EECP
Because hypertension belongs to the larger family of cardiovascular diseases, we treat our patients with therapies that not only lower blood pressure but also
improve heart and vascular function. One of them is EECP. This noninvasive therapy is best known for relieving angina in patients with coronary artery disease, but it also engenders arterial health and lowers blood pressure.
Chelation and Other IV Therapies
IV therapies also provide excellent benefits for patients with hypertension and other cardiovascular disorders. EDTA chelation removes lead and other heavy metals from the arteries resulting in systemic improvements in cardiovascular function. And IV magnesium relaxes the arteries, smoothes out heart rhythms, and reduces blood pressure.
Supplements, Not Drugs
Of course, patients who come to the Whitaker Wellness Institute with high blood pressure are prescribed a comprehensive nutritional supplement program. In addition to supplements that help decrease blood pressure, such as Chinese herbal formulas, reishi mushrooms, coenzyme Q10, magnesium, and fish oil, they are also recommended to take additional nutrients that improve overall cardiovascular health.
Treat Underlying Causes
Finally, we screen our patients with hypertension for common, yet overlooked conditions that may contribute to their high blood pressure. One of the tests we run is an overnight sleep study to determine the presence of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea contributes to a host of problems, including increased risk of diabetes, stroke, heart attack, and hypertension. Once sleep apnea is corrected, amazing improvements often follow. We also test for and correct heavy metal toxicity and hormone imbalances and provide solutions for anxiety and obesity, which can contribute to hypertension as well.
- Personalized Lifestyle Program
Our Back to Health Program patients are instructed in a regimen of therapeutic lifestyle changes for lowering blood pressure. We teach them about the importance of a diet containing potassium-rich vegetables and fruit, lean protein, and omega-3 essential fatty acids from salmon and other fish. They are also guided through a moderate exercise program tailored to their specific needs. Better still, we provide our patients with hypertension the tools they need to stick with these lifestyle changes once they return home.
