High Cholesterol

How We Treat High Cholesterol

More than 100 million American adults have total cholesterol levels of 200 mg/dL or higher, and according to government treatment guidelines, at least a third of them should be taking drugs to lower it. This is nonsense. At the Whitaker Wellness Institute, we use drug-free therapies that not only lower cholesterol naturally but, more important, also reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and enhance overall health.

The most popular drugs used to lower cholesterol—Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol, and other statins—block the enzyme pathways involved in the synthesis of not only cholesterol but also coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a potent antioxidant that is involved in cellular energy production. Therefore, statin drugs deplete blood levels of this essential compound—with disastrous consequences for your health.

As CoQ10 stores decline, so does energy output, which is why statin drugs’ side effects include muscle pain and weakness and heart failure. Statins are also toxic to the liver, and they’re linked with memory loss and other neurological deficits. One statin drug (Baycol) was actually taken off the market a few years ago after causing dozens of deaths.

Conventional physicians seem to believe that high cholesterol is the end-all in cardiovascular disease, but it’s only one of several risk factors. Although we do offer a number of natural therapies for lowering cholesterol at Whitaker Wellness, we focus not only on cholesterol but on all of the known risk factors for heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular disorders.

Our Drug-Free Approach

Supplements, Not Drugs to Lower Cholesterol Naturally
The Whitaker Wellness approach to lowering cholesterol includes targeted nutritional supplements such as red yeast rice, policosanol, niacin, and glucomannan. But that’s just the beginning. Inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and elevations in homocysteine and lipoprotein(a) are also associated with cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol. After evaluating your blood tests, your physician will put together an individualized, comprehensive regimen of nutrients aimed at correcting these underlying problems.

Intensive Therapies for Cardiovascular Disease
If you have more advanced cardiovascular disease, your physician might also recommend a course of EECP, EDTA chelation, or hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Although these therapies do not lower cholesterol per se, they do improve the health of the arteries, strengthen the heart, and reduce your likelihood of suffering a serious cardiovascular event.

Personalized Lifestyle Program

Your physician at Whitaker Wellness will help you get started on an intensive lifestyle program aimed at lowering cholesterol and other risk factors for heart disease. The benefits of these safe, natural therapies are vastly underestimated and, as a result, are rarely stressed by conventional physicians. Yet according to Harvard experts, smoking cessation, weight control, proper diet, and regular exercise would result in an 80 percent reduction in cardiovascular disease!

We understand that making lifestyle changes is easier said than done. However, the intensive residence program we offer though our Back to Health Program gives patients hands-on experience. During your stay, you’ll eat heart-healthy, cholesterol-lowering meals prepared by our gourmet chef.
