FAQ’s

Below you will find some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) regarding the Whitaker Wellness Institute and our Back to Health Program.

How will the Back to Health Program benefit me?

If you suffer from any chronic or degenerative disease—or if you’re concerned about developing one—you can certainly expect to benefit from the Back to Health Program. When you spend one to three weeks focused solely on getting well, significant improvements in a wide range of health concerns can be made in a short period of time. Our multifaceted approach, which includes lifestyle changes, nutritional therapies, targeted supplements, and a number of very powerful treatments, has been proven time and again over the last 30-plus years by thousands of patients.

Will I be able to get off my prescription medications?

Reducing or eliminating medications is a common goal of patients who come to the clinic, and in most cases, we are able to help them accomplish this goal. However, this is something you will work on with your Whitaker Wellness physician on an individual basis.

Will my diabetes or heart disease be reversed?

The Back to Health Program is based on Dr. Whitaker’s belief—and experience with thousands of patients—that diabetes, heart disease, and other health concerns can be dramatically improved, if not reversed, by diet, lifestyle modifications, targeted nutritional supplements, and our cutting-edge therapies. Of course, there are no guarantees and success depends on the severity of your illness and your commitment and dedication to complying with your physician’s recommendations. However, the vast majority of our patients notice sometimes-dramatic improvements in symptoms, often as early as the first week of the program.

If I am healthy, will the Back to Health Program help me?

This program is very beneficial for those who are healthy. For you, our focus revolves around teaching you to live a healthy lifestyle and preventing future health problems. If you’re thinking of enrolling in the Back to Health Program for preventive purposes, we commend you on your vision, initiative, and recognition that your health is your most important asset.

What is the schedule for the Back to Health Program?

The program begins with an orientation on Sunday evening and ends the following Saturday morning. Your days will consist of medical testing, therapies, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with scheduled classes and seminars throughout the day. Evening activities include lectures by Dr. Whitaker and the Whitaker Wellness physicians. You may also have some free time to enjoy the Newport Beach area if you so desire. The schedule for subsequent weeks is similar. For a detailed schedule, click here.

What is the difference between the one-, two-, and three-week Back to Health Programs?

Coming to the clinic for one week will really help you redirect your lifestyle, undergo some of our unique therapies, and address your health concerns with your Whitaker Wellness physician. The two-week program allows you to better absorb the information and advice presented during the lectures and workshops, receive more intensive therapies, and have additional consultations with your physician, in order to further your quest for health. A three-week stay gives you time to complete entire treatment courses and “lock in” the lifestyle habits necessary for optimal health, putting you well on your way toward achieving your health goals. Choosing the appropriate program will depend on your health concerns, financial needs, and the goals you want to achieve. When you speak with a Patient Services Representative, you will work together to come up with your best course of action.

I'm not sure I can afford the Back to Health Program. What are my options?

We offer a medical credit card you can apply for that, if approved, will allow you to make payments over 12 months, interest-free. You could also consider coming in for a one- or two-day visit for a physician evaluation, blood workup, diagnostic tests, and limited therapies.

Where will I stay?

During the Back to Health Program, you will stay at the Wyndham Irvine Hotel, located near Whitaker Wellness Institute. This is where all of the lectures and educational workshops take place and where your meals are served. A free shuttle will take you back and forth from the hotel to the clinic for your appointments.  Some patients opt to use other accommodations. However, we recommend the Wyndham as this location is where the meals and educational portion of our program occur.

Is lodging included in the price of the Back to Health Program?

No. The cost of the Back to Health Program covers the education series, including the workshops and lectures, exercise sessions, other group activities, and all of your meals.  However we have negotiated competitive special pricing for our patients during their stay.

Can I skip the lodging/lectures/meals portion of the Back to Health Program and just come for the therapies?

Yes, outpatient treatment is an option. However, the one-, two-, and three-week Back to Health Programs offer a much more comprehensive approach to wellness. Just imagine how beneficial an entire week (or weeks) of lectures, exercise, healthy gourmet meals, and treatments can be when it comes to effectively turning your health around. The structured and supportive environment of our Back to Health Program can help you accomplish significant lifestyle changes that will make a lasting impact on your long-term health. Plus, you’ll be surrounded by other clinic participants who share your health goals and can offer camaraderie and support during your health journey.

How many patients attend the Back to Health Program at a time?

We limit each Back to Health Program session to no more than 35 to 40 patients. We have found that it is beneficial to go through the program as a group. Of course, treatment plans are individualized for each patient, but you will receive significant benefits from the support of your fellow patients, in addition to one-on-one attention from the staff. Many people find that they form special bonds and enduring friendships with their fellow patients by the end of the week.

I want Dr. Whitaker to be my doctor at the clinic. Is this possible?

In order for Dr. Whitaker to have the greatest impact on all of our patients, he works closely with our team of skilled physicians and health care professionals to ensure that each patient gets the best care possible. Dr. Whitaker is very active in the educational aspect of our Back to Health Program and often gives lectures during your stay. He’s in the trenches teaching patients how they can play an active part in their road to recovery.

How will I be evaluated throughout the Back to Health Program?

You will have an hour-long initial visit with your Whitaker Wellness physician. This will give you ample time to thoroughly discuss your health concerns and undergo a complete physical examination. Your physician will order appropriate diagnostic testing, which will be completed at the clinic during the first couple of days of your stay. You will also have two follow-up appointments with your physician in the first week. During those visits, your doctor will review the results of your blood workup and other diagnostic tests, answer any questions you may have, evaluate your progress, and modify your treatment plan, if necessary. If you are enrolled in a two- or three-week program, additional physician visits will be scheduled. The Whitaker Wellness staff will also monitor your blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, and overall condition on a daily basis.

Can I bring someone along?

Yes, Dr. Whitaker encourages you to bring a companion with you to participate in the educational portion of the program for a basic fee that also includes meals and other activities. This is great support while you are at the clinic, and it helps you implement the program after you return home. If your companion elects to be a patient, additional expenses would be incurred. However, your companion would receive a significant discount on the educational program and meals.

Are my meals provided?

Yes, all meals are included in the cost of the Back to Health Program. Diet is an important aspect of the healthy lifestyle you are learning to adopt. You will enjoy delicious and nutritious meals prepared by our gourmet chef and served in our private dining room at the hotel. If you have an appointment or treatment during mealtime, your food will be delivered to you at the clinic.

What about exercise?

During your Back to Health Program, you will learn why exercise is such an integral part of optimal health. Our exercise physiologist will test your exercise capabilities and help design a safe exercise program for you to follow. We also have group exercise and water aerobics classes (weather permitting) that you are encouraged to attend. And although shuttle service is provided throughout the day, we encourage you to walk the short distance between the hotel and the clinic.

How should I dress?

We recommend that you dress very casually. The weather is mild and sunny most of the year in Southern California, although it gets rather cool in the winter months—and evenings are cool year round. Dressing in comfortable layers is always advised. Sweats, jeans, shorts (in the summer), and other casual attire are appropriate. You won’t need more formal or dressy clothes at the clinic, but if you have an interest in going out in the surrounding area on the weekend, plan accordingly. The hotel has a pool, so you may want to pack a swimsuit. And make sure you bring a pair of comfortable shoes for walking and exercising.

How fast do the programs fill up?

We limit the number of patients in each program to ensure that each person receives individualized attention while they are here. For this reason, the programs tend to fill up quickly. Please contact a Patient Services Representative for current availability by calling (866) 944-8253.

How do I reserve a space in the Back to Health Program?

Please call a Patient Services Representative to reserve a space at (866) 944-8253. Note: A deposit will be required to reserve an actual attendance date.
